This was a day of following the R5 cycle route from Colwyn Bay to Prestatyn. As such it was all paved and almost pancake flat.
The coastal defences around Pensarn are made up of about 25,000, and they are all numbered, concrete blocks shaped like kid’s toys stacked together. Strangely impressive.
Once you get past Pensarn the mobile homes appear and don’t let up. They stretch for miles along the coast. The song “litttle boxes” springs to mind.
Rhyl was a bit odd as the sea front was deserted. Just a few shut cafes and beach shops. Even the sea had deserted Rhyl, being as far out as it could go at low tide.
Prestatyn I had visiited two years ago when I completed Offa’s dyke path which runs from Chepstow to Prestatyn along the Welsh border.
By reaching Prestatyn from Chepstow by using the Wales Coastal path as well I can claim to have walked a lap of Wales.
This was an excuse to have a pint of Flintshire IPA in Prestaty.
